What is better than giving back? And what is better than to regrow, renew or restore, especially after being damaged? Well that’s what is going to be the newest trend within the fashion industry, such as what brands like Patagonia have done, with many more to follow.
The upcoming trend is regenerative to promote a more resilient environment that would withstand natural problems. This has seen a focus on increasing the health of human beings and the natural environment alike. A brand like Patagonia is one of the best examples for regeneration. Regenerative fashion sees apparel created from fibres which a brand has farmed. This is completely the opposite of the synthetic nature of fast fashion which is damaging our environment. Clothes being made like like the former is actually healing the earth. We can see how this is going to be a trend in the next upcoming years and how this is going to be changing the fashion industry sooner than we think.
Patagonia is an outdoor company doing this. They can utilise natural resources that don’t take away from wildlife spaces and that will work to restore health to the environment. As a company they do this to restore the health of the soil and the climate, by focusing on animal welfare, robust soil health, land management and fairness to farmers and workers. It's a win, win in all aspects and a healthier way to save our planets and the wildlife living on it. Their experience and work on regenerative fashion is helping towards the safeguarding of the planet.
We have seen how fast fashion has been killing our environment, some environmental impacts of the fashion industry are: water pollution which contains pesticides and fertilisers; around 70 millions barrels of oil each year are being used to make polyester; microbes are being released into water when washing clothes; and the industry contributes to 10% of global carbon emissions. Now we know all the damaging things which have been caused by fast fashion, people have become more conscious and aware.
We’re finding solutions to fix the problems and finding alternatives for becoming more sustainable — regenerative fashion is a perfect example of this.
