No More Fitting Room Needed
Virtual try on is going to change the future of retail. There is no longer a need for fitting rooms, especially with technology taking over in the fashion industry. Virtual try on technology allows customers to try on products such as items of apparel, shoes, jewellery, and even make up just by using their camera. Virtual try on gives the impression of actually having the product on and seeing how it looks, before purchasing it. The technology being used is AR and it maps a realistic virtual representation of the product, giving an image to show how the product will look on the customer’s body.
In the upcoming years, this will be a macro trend for the future of the retail industry. It will reduce the amount of people using fitting rooms and the number of those returning unwanted items. Facts show that 19% of customers who used virtual try on found that in-person the items looked just like how they did on the camera. 36% of Americans are interested in trying on clothes by using virtual try on to avoid physical fitting rooms, especially after COVID-19. Virtual try on in retail stores has become more user-friendly and realistic as well, with there being less theft in fitting rooms and less people actually opting to use the fitting rooms.
Companies have already invested a great deal in the technology, perhaps most notably Farfetch. They have teamed up with Snapchat to allow users to try clothes on virtually via the camera function, after Converse was the first company to do this. H&M has also recently announced that they will be teaming up with gaming company Nintendo to create “H&M LOOOP ISLAND” to allow figures on Animal crossing to wear clothes from their brand. Players will be able to recycle in-game outfits and receive new ones.
Also we can see how this is going to change the fashion industry now and in the future, making it easier for both consumers and workers. The virtual try on market is expecting to grow 25% at an annual growth between 2021-2028 to reach 15.4 billion dollars (US). By this, you can see how this is going to change the way people shop and try on products in the future.
